The United Nations has called climate change the defining issue of our time, and we know that carbon dioxide is the biggest cause of climbing global temperatures and rising ocean levels.

With so much excess carbon dioxide trapped in our atmosphere, there needs to be a way to take it out in order to slow or ultimately reverse the effects. That’s where the idea of carbon capture and storage comes in.

A throne speech, delivered at the Alberta legislature Wednesday, outlines the new United Conservative government's plans for spring session.

Premier Jason Kenney followed up the throne speech Wednesday with a bill to kill the Alberta carbon tax — and he put Ottawa politicians on notice that if they try to backstop it with their own levy, he’ll see them in court.

“Promise made. Promise kept,” Kenney told reporters as his new United Conservative government tabled its signature bill of the new legislature session.

While winds have been blowing away from the town of High Level, the fire risk remains extreme, conditions are still unpredictable and wildfire evacuees were told Wednesday to plan to stay away from the area for longer than first anticipated.

“The danger has not passed nor has it diminished,” High Level Mayor Crystal McAteer said. “Wildfires are highly unpredictable and can change at any moment.”

The Chuckegg Creek fire remained out of control Wednesday and had grown to about 92,000 hectares in size. There’s still heavy smoke as it churns about three kilometres south of High Level, but favourable weather on Tuesday allowed crews to protect power poles west and south of the community.

Anti-pipeline protesters dogged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as he appeared at a fundraiser in Vancouver, interrupting a speech to supporters on May 22.

The interaction happened at the Opus Hotel as the prime minister attended one of two scheduled events with federal Liberals in the city.

Inside, the prime minister found himself in a terse exchange with a Tsleil-Waututh Nation member, Will George, who accused him of being a “liar and a weak leader.”

“Our waters, those are our spiritual highways. You have no right to do that to us,” George said.

Trudeau responded by arguing that not all First Nations are opposed to the project.

A woman in a recreational vehicle that was reported stolen led authorities on a wild chase in Los Angeles on Tuesday, smashing into cars and a palm tree before finally coming to a halt with a large dog hanging out of the shattered windshield.

The half-hour chase began around 7 p.m. in Santa Clarita, just north of L.A., when the RV failed to yield for the California Highway Patrol, KABC-TV reported.

Video showed the RV careening at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometres per hour) from Santa Clarita into the San Fernando Valley.

The RV hit several cars and then a palm tree in a shopping mall parking lot that tore off the passenger-side door and wrecked the front end, leaving the windshield dangling on the hood.

Democrats accuse Trump of running away as infrastructure meeting collapses

Democratic rep. Chuck Schumer accused President Donald Trump of having a pre-planned excuse for not working with Democrats on infrastructure well before they met, saying Trump 'had to run away' when he was forced to address how he would pay for it.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she prays for President Donald Trump after the meeting on infrastructure between Democratic congressional leaders and the president went sideways.

Speaking outside the White House Wednesday, US President Donald Trump explained why he walked out of a meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer over the former's comments on his alleged "cover-up."

In his rambling and at times incoherent comments, Trump said he believes he is the most transparent President in American history "probably" and expressed that his son Don Jr. "went through hell" during the Mueller probe.

The President also listed the accomplishments of his administration as reasons why Congress should not be investigating him or impeding him in any way.

Indonesian police have deployed tear gas as supporters of losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto protested in Jakarta on Wednesday.

WARNING: May contain graphic images.

Pro-Subianto demonstrators had taken to the streets of Indonesia's capital after the announcement of official election results.

The clashes first erupted late on Tuesday and authorities said six people have been killed in the rioting.

Overnight, vehicles and a paramilitary police dormitory were set ablaze as police using tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon battled protesters who threw molotov cocktails and burning projectiles.

National Police chief Tito Karnavian said the people who died were hit by gunshots or blunt devices.

Indonesia's Election Commission on Tuesday said President Joko Widodo had won a second term with 55.5% of the vote in the April 17 election.

Subianto, an ultra-nationalist former special forces general, has refused to accept the results and declared himself the winner.

Patrick Shanahan, acting U.S. Secretary of Defense, said Tuesday the U.S. received "credible intelligence" in early May about threats to U.S. forces and interests in the middle east.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday Iran would be met with “great force” if it attempted anything against U.S. interests in the Middle East, adding that Tehran has been very hostile toward Washington.

Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for an event in Pennsylvania that he was willing to have talks with Iran “when they’re ready” but no discussions were going on now.
