Ernesto Valverde has named his squad for the Camp Nou’s first ever derby against Girona, and it reads as follows: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Piqué, Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Iniesta, Luis Suárez, Messi, Dembelé, Cillessen, Coutinho, Paulinho, Jordi Alba, Digne, Sergi Roberto, Aleix Vidal, Umtiti and Vermalen.

Yerry Mina, Paco Alcácer, Denis Suárez and André Gomes are the four players that the manager has opted to leave out.

The announcement was made shortly after the training session at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, where the first team were joined by Barça B goalkeeper Jokin Ezkieta.

Before the workout began, the players gathered to congratulate Sergi Roberto on the extension of his contract with the club through to 2022.

Sergi Roberto took advantage of the event staged for the siging of his contract extension with Barça until 2022 to give his opinion on the team’s fortunes so far this season. “We are where we want to be in every competition,” he revealed, highlighting the fact that Barça are leaders in La Liga, in the final of the Copa del Rey and 1-1 with Chelsea in their Champions League last 16 tie with the second leg to come at Camp Nou.

The player was accompanied by FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu as he reaffirmed his commitment to the Club, claiming that extending his contract with Barça was always his first option. "I have always wanted to be here, I have been a Barça fan since I was little. I have been at Barça for 12 years and my objective is to stay as long as possible," said Roberto.

Sergi Roberto cast an eye back over his Barça career so far, recalling his debut at Camp Nou against Celta and, of course, his famous goal that sealed the spectacular comeback against PSG in the Champions League last season.

The local lad from Reus, just an hour south of Barcelona, also had words of advice for the young players coming through at the Club with dreams of following in his footsteps to the first team squad. “They have to fight, always be patient and never stop working,” said the man who can play either in midfielder or at full back.

President Bartomeu highlighted the player’s commitment to the Club, also praising his perseverance and hard work in reaching his current position amongst the footballing elite. “Sergi Roberto is a key figure in this historic Barça era”, said the president, citing his goal against PSG and his role in Leo Messi’s famous winner in the 3-2 victory over Real Madrid last season at the Santiago Bernabéu.

It took nine matches and 730 minutes of football against Chelsea for Leo Messi to score his first goal against them. It came 12 years after his debut against the Premier League club, which was back on the 22 February 2006, a day when he dazzled the world with his skills, even if he did not find the net.

Chelsea had resisted the charms of the Argentine longer than anyone else. Only Villarreal, which held Messi scoreless for 594 minutes, managed to keep him at bay for anything like the length of time that the West London club did.

Speaking after tonight’s Champions League visit to Chelsea, coach Ernesto Valverde seemed contented enough with the 1-1 draw.

“I’m happy, because this was Stamford Bridge, not the Camp Nou” he said. “This is a difficult ground and we were playing against the Premiership champions.”

"It was clash of styles between two different teams. We wanted to control the possession and they wanted to surprise us on the counter. But we couldn’t finish things off in the final third. There was a lot of traffic in and around their area.”

"They were playing a five-man defence. But if we were to play with five forwards, all we would have done is create chances for them. We were trying to finish off our moves, but we also had to be careful to protect us from counter attacks.”

And it was Chelsea who opened the scoring off the boot of Willian.

"They scored because they are a very good team” was Valverde’s matter-of-fact explanation. “We have players that can make a difference, and so do they.”

“But we kept pushing and took advantage of their mistake. It was a tense game because the outcome was so uncertain, but I think it was a good result for us.”

"The away goal here was very important. It means they won’t have a favourable result to defend in the second leg. I think we’ll both stick to our own styles at the Camp Nou. We have the edge, but it’s nothing definitive.”
